Teacher and student resources for
biographical research, "living museums," and "talking
tombstone" presentations and other educational uses.
This site was created for local school use as part
of the "Teaching American History Grant: Documenting History"
grant coordinated by Missouri Southern State University in Joplin
along with the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence in Webb
City, Missouri. The Powers Museum was one of two humanities partners
for the 2005–08 grant and the creator of this site.
The goal of this project is to introduce people from
Carthage's past (all these examples are deceased) who might be appropriate
subjects to research for school projects. Info includes brief biographies,
portraits, and when possible, a primary document about the individual
and/or written by the individual. More of the latter will be added
throughout 2009–2010.
For the most part, no internet encyclopedia sites
have been given below, so be sure to do a search of your favorite
online encyclopedia for a basic biography. However, not all the
names below will be found in such sources; but by following the
links and resource suggestions below, you can begin your research.
Also noted is whether or not the Powers Museum has
additional research materials available for consultation by students
and parents on site (1617 W. Oak). The museum can not conduct research
for you, but will make files/books available to those visiting the
museum. The Carthage Public Library also has vertical files available
on some of these persons and both facilities have photocopiers on
site (copy cost 20 cents per page).
The Powers Museum also has a traveling trunk with
materials for classroom use featuring a few selected names from
this list and a second trunk focused on Marlin Perkins alone. For
further information on these and other history-themed trunks, consult
the museum at 417-358-2667 or pmuseum@ecarthage.com.
A listing of trunk themes (although some have changed in focus from
original listing) can be seen at this
link.
