Carthage, Missouri in the 1860s & 1870s (2000 Exhibit now CLOSED)

Displayed in honor of the May 2000 Civil War Reenactment, the Powers Museum featured a sampling of "Streets of History" window cards created for a previous reenactment. Information presented focused on pre- and post-Civil War businesses located on selected lots around the historic courthouse square.

Caffee's Drug Co., NW corner of square (now Bank of America/Jasper County Annex II site)

Generally speaking, years represented on most of these cards included 1860, 1867, 1873 and some later dates as well.

The following excerpt from Miss Emily A. Belt's diary of 1867 gives an idea of what Carthage was like immediately after the Civil War. She wrote:

"Next came Carthage, that much-heard-of place to which everyone is coming. The town is very new but the rubbish left by the ravages of war gives it a much dilapidated appearance. By the remains of brick buildings here I should judge that there had been some nice brick buildings here."
